The Beautiful Land
Alan Averill
Science Fiction / Time Travel
Takahiro O’Leary has a very special job……working for the Axon Corporation as an explorer of parallel timelines—as many and as varied as anyone could imagine. A great gig—until information he brought back gave Axon the means to maximize profits by changing the past, present, and future of this world. If Axon succeeds, Tak will lose Samira Moheb, the woman he has loved since high school—because her future will cease to exist. A veteran of the Iraq War suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Samira can barely function in her everyday life, much less deal with Tak’s ravings of multiple realities. The only way to save her is for Tak to use the time travel device he “borrowed” to transport them both to an alternate timeline. But what neither Tak nor Axon knows is that the actual inventor of the device is searching for a timeline called the Beautiful Land—and he intends to destroy every other possible present and future to find it.The switch is thrown, and reality begins to warp—horribly. And Tak realizes that to save Sam, he must save the entire world…Amazon.com ReviewI honestly believe this has a great chance at winning. If you do decide to do a little more polish, you might consider finding some beta readers or a continuity editor to tighten up some of those little characterization details and the timing for when they occur. But, seriously, this is the most interesting thing I've read this year, so you're doing something right! Good luck. Amazon.com ReviewThis is a very strong beginning to what promises to be a very memorable novel. I love the characters, the quirkiness of the prose, the way the dialogue is both sharp and natural, and the flow of the story. We haven't got to the whole time travel thing yet, so maybe the story will hit a snag there or get too complex and technical, but I'm guessing it won't. Great stuff, and I really hope to read more.

Chapter 1 The Wright Brothers MissionWhat happens to the world of aviation if the Wright brothers are not the first to fly? Chances are very good that the French would have that honor and take over as the aviation leaders of the world. However, they would probably keep the flying to a selected few who would consider it a flight of fancy while the Germans would be producing powerful fighters and bombers thus changing how WWI ends. The 1800 Club must send back a club member with aviation knowledge and that turns out to be John Brand, a writer for an aviation magazine and ex-air force officer. He is shocked when he finds out the reason the brothers stopped trying to fly.Chapter II The Hindenburg MissionWhat happens if the Hindenburg blows up over the North Sea instead of over Lakehurst New Jersey as it really did? There would be no survivors, as all would drown in the North Sea causing their children and future ancestors not to exist. Doctors, artists, lawyers, statesmen...

The Time Regulation Institute
Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar
Young Adult / Science Fiction / Time Travel
A literary discovery: an uproarious tragicomedy of modernization, in its first-ever English translation Perhaps the greatest Turkish novel of the twentieth century, being discovered around the world only now, more than fifty years after its first publication, The Time Regulation Institute is an antic, freewheeling send-up of the modern bureaucratic state. At its center is Hayri Irdal, an infectiously charming antihero who becomes entangled with an eccentric cast of characters—a television mystic, a pharmacist who dabbles in alchemy, a dignitary from the lost Ottoman Empire, a “clock whisperer”—at the Time Regulation Institute, a vast organization that employs a hilariously intricate system of fines for the purpose of changing all the clocks in Turkey to Western time. Recounted in sessions with his psychoanalyst, the story of Hayri Irdal’s absurdist misadventures plays out as a brilliant allegory of the collision of tradition and modernity, of East and West, infused with a poignant blend of hope for the promise of the future and nostalgia for a simpler time.

Black Light
Bedford, K. A.
Science Fiction / Time Travel
A cracking supernatural crime mystery from the twice winner of the Aurealis Award for Best Australian Science Fiction Novel.
This charming spooky novel is set in Pelican River, south-west of Perth, in the 1920s. With all the charm and cosiness of a BBC TV period drama, the story plays out in the aftermath of the First World War and is centred around the eccentric and newly widowed Ruth, her butler Rutherford, and her aunt Julia – together with Ruth’s inventor neighbour Gordon and his raft of hounds, and the elusive and sinister demon, Mr Nor.
Humour abounds and the characters explore the new ideas in science and physics of the era, as well as the development of science fiction itself, with the cameos by the likes of Mr H.G. Wells.
This novel also bears the traces of the effect of war on a nation and its people, and the complex question of attitudes towards Indigenous people at the beginning of the last century.
